Zwarte Piet, or Black Pete, is a traditional character in the Dutch celebration of Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas), who is said to arrive from Spain by steamboat with his helpers. The character of Zwarte Piet is typically portrayed by white people with their faces painted black, wearing colorful costumes and curly wigs, and often exaggerated red lips and gold earrings.
